We sought answers from Imam Fasih and Mufti Nanna, which are listed below. Question Does a family who is eligible to receive Zakat ul Fitre also pay the Zakat ul Fitre? Answer from Imam Fasih: Sadaqatul Fitr is Wajib upon one who possesses so much that Zakat is due on him. • A person (on whom Zakat is not due) possesses items more than his daily needs (for the purpose of trade or otherwise). The value of these items adds up to the Nisaah (amount for Zakat being Wajib). Sadaqatul Fitr will be Wajib upon such a person as well, even though a whole year may not have passed with such items. • A person should discharge his Sadaqatul Fitr in respect of himself and all those who are dependent upon him. Like his wife and his minor children (who do not possess any wealth). If they do, the Sadaqatul Fitr may be given from their own wealth. • It is not Wajib to give Sadaqatul Fitr on behalf of a child born on the day of Eid (after the time of Fajr sets in). • It is not Wajib to give Sadaqatul Fitr on behalf of one's mature children. Yes, one may give on behalf of one's insane child. • NOTE: One upon whom Sadaqatul Fitr is Wajib must discharge this duty whether he has observed the Rozas (fasting) of Ramadan or not. • Sadaqatul Fitr is not Wajib on one for whom it is permissible to take Zakat and Sadaqatul Question: Is the Zakat ul Fitre recipient Sadaqa eligible? Answer from Imam Fasih: • The recipients of Sadaqatul Fitr are the same as that of Zakat. • Further, the Sadaqatul Fitr of one person could be given to just one rightful recipient or could be distributed between a few recipients of Sadaqatul Fitr. • It is also permissible that the Sadaqatul Fitr of a group of people be collectively given to just one individual (recipient of Sadaqatul Fitr). Question: We have a zakat Al fitre donation for several hundred dollars....Can you donate a lot of extra Zakat ul Fitre? Answer from Imam Fasih: Perhaps it is many families donating at once and they are large in number therefore it is adding up. And yes whatever the amount is, it is OK to donate. Question: Does a zakat recipient have to pay fidyah? They don't have the money. Answer from Imam Fasih: They will still need to pay it at some point in their life. Or make wasiyyah of it. If they don’t have the money for it now, they can pay it later. Question: A new convert has been Muslim about a month or so Do they need to pay zakat? Answer from Imam Fasih: No they do not. Question: Can we give zakat ul-fitr to a family that already received an annual zakat ? Answer from Imam Fasih: Yes, you can still give it to them as long as they still fit the category and requirements of a recipient. Question: What about the Nisab?
